09 practical tips for your first interview.

Your first interview will certainly come with some shortcomings, most importantly your own anxiety and stress. Therefore, to help you boost your confidence, score points with the employer, and prepare well before the interview, we kindly invite readers to follow the advice below.

BEFORE THE INTERVIEW

Trước khi phỏng vấn

#1 Thoroughly research the company and the position you are applying for

One of the ways to score points with the employer is to thoroughly research the company and the position you are applying for. Indeed, before the interview, you should spend time learning information about the organization (establishment date, field of activity/business model, communication channels, competitor information, market information related to the company’s field of activity…), especially the requirements of the position you are applying for (Job Requirements, working hours, experience, qualifications, work location…).

After synthesizing the information, you need to formulate your own assessment based on your research on the above contents. The purpose is to see if it truly matches your capabilities? And whether this is the right choice for you.

Before the interview, you should take time to review the synthesized information once more to clearly understand the work you will be doing. This makes it easier for you to ask additional questions about the position to the employer.

During the interview, you may encounter related questions such as “Have you researched our company/organization?”, “What do you know about our company?”, or “Why did you apply for this position?”. This is also a way to build your confidence before the interview as well as show the employer that you have a serious interest in this position.

#2 Prepare necessary documents in advance

The documents you need to prepare: hard copy Resume / CV, relevant certificates (if any or depending on the employer’s requirements), a small notebook with a pen to take notes of important points or questions and information you want to discuss with the employer during the interview.

And you should prepare these documents in advance, do not wait until the day of the interview to start printing because many issues will arise (printing file glitches, unable to find a color printing shop, or running out of time to print…).

Prepare all documents in advance to avoid unnecessary mistakes. You might think you have plenty of time, but an unexpected incident could make you late for the interview and affect your mindset before arriving.

#3 Choose professional attire

First impressions are always about your appearance. This will be your opening greeting to the employer. Choose a neat, formal outfit such as a suit; a shirt; trousers or a pencil skirt (for women)…

These are outfits that show professionalism; as well as respect for the interviewer. Besides attire, a neat hairstyle and neatly trimmed nails are also plus points. Furthermore, depending on the specifics of the job, the position, and the field you are applying for, some team leads may not take this issue too seriously.

#4 Practice answering interview questions in advance

There is no more effective practice method than practicing answering common interview questions at home beforehand; you can practice in front of a mirror or ask for help from relatives, friends, or experienced professionals to support you with feedback and suggestions.

The purpose of this activity is to help you receive positive feedback, boost confidence and reflexes, as well as find appropriate ways to answer.

#5 Arrive on time for the interview

This is one of the extremely important notes you need to know. Arriving early and on time for your first interview will make you look professional and create a good impression with the employer.

If you arrive late, you not only waste other people’s time but also affect your mindset during the interview. However, you should not arrive too early either; arriving 15 minutes before the scheduled time is appropriate and helps you feel relaxed.

DURING THE INTERVIEW

Trong khi phỏng vấn

#6 Actively listen and answer interview questions directly

To build a good connection with the employer, you should listen very carefully to the interview questions, or if there are multiple questions at once, you should take notes in your notebook. Then, answer these questions one by one.

In addition, failing to grasp the point of the question and beating around the bush will waste the employer’s time, and you will lose points for not getting straight to the point of the answer.

#7 Pay attention to body language

Body language during an interview reveals quite a lot about you. Experienced employers will read this through gestures such as clutching your lapel; tightly interlacing your hands, or shaking your leg… Be careful!

You should practice and control these behaviors by sitting in front of a mirror; or recording a video of yourself practicing answering questions. That way, you can see if you have any unstable expressions or behaviors; and correct them immediately.
