Problem Solving – TOP 10 Skills Needed in 2025

In today’s world, problem-solving skills have become one of the most critical factors for success in both life and work. With the complexity and uncertainty of the modern world, from the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic to the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the human ability to constantly face and solve problems has gradually become a necessity.

According to the ”The Future of Jobs” report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), problem-solving skills rank among the top 10 skills for 2025. Indeed, problem-solving requires not only creative thinking and flexible application, but also the ability to analyze, correctly identify problems, and make smart decisions and solutions.

Therefore, investing time and effort into developing problem-solving skills is a way to open doors to new opportunities and achieve success in your life and career.

Let’s explore the importance and effective application of problem-solving skills in life with HUFLIT CAREER HUB.

What are problem-solving skills?

Problem-solving is both an ability and a process. As an ability, it can help resolve issues encountered in various environments such as at home, school, abroad, and social situations, among others. As a process, problem-solving involves a series of steps to find solutions to questions or concerns arising throughout life. (According to Coursera)

While problem-solving is often identified as a distinct skill, there are other related skills that contribute to this ability. These skills include:

  • Active listening

  • Problem analysis

  • Research

  • Creativity in problem-solving

  • Communication

  • Time management

  • Decision-making

  • Team building

Why are problem-solving skills important?

Problem-solving skills are crucial at every level across many industries, and to solve problems effectively, you also need to simultaneously apply job-specific or industry-specific technical skills.

For example, a doctor will need active listening and communication skills when interacting with patients, but will also need effective professional knowledge related to diagnosing illnesses and prescribing medications.

Problem-solving skills help you gain confidence, remain calm, and devise the most optimal handling plan. Thanks to the process of identification, evaluation, and multi-dimensional analysis, you can make the right choices and master arising issues.

Five steps to effective problem-solving

Effective problem-solving involves five basic steps based on the IDEAL model created in 1984 by psychology professors John D. Bransford and Barry S. Stein.

The steps to solve problems in this IDEAL model include:

#1 Identify the problem and find the cause

To solve a problem, you must first acknowledge that it exists in order to find its root cause.

To find the cause of the problem, you can ask several related questions such as:

  • Can it be considered a problem?

  • What is the basis for determining that it is a problem?

  • Can this problem be solved?

  • How big is this problem?

  • Who might be involved and solve this problem?

  • Is there a way to correctly identify the problem?

  • What are the tools and processes to find the solution to this problem?

#2. Determine expected goals

Every problem is different. The goals you hope to achieve when solving a problem depend on the scope of the issue. Some examples of goals you can set include:

  • Gather as much factual information as possible.

  • Brainstorm various solutions to come up with the best one.

  • Be flexible when considering additional perspectives and viewpoints.

  • State clearly and encourage questions so that everyone involved understands and aims toward a specific goal.

  • Be open to different solutions if your chosen ones do not work.

  • Maintain a positive attitude throughout the process of finding solutions.

#3. Propose potential solutions

Once you have identified your expected goals, it is time to start the process of proposing suitable solutions. This includes several steps such as fact-finding, brainstorming, prioritizing solutions, evaluating the cost of each chosen solution, and considering factors of time, personnel, and money.

#4. Choose the best solution and take action

Evaluate the pros and cons of each potential solution and choose the one most likely to solve the problem within your limited budget, capabilities, and the resources of yourself or the organization. Once a solution is chosen, it is important that you commit to and execute it.

Create an action plan to implement and share the plan with all stakeholders clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Make sure everyone understands their role for a successful conclusion.

#5. Review the results

Evaluations provide deep insights into your current situation and address future problem-solving. When evaluating results, ask yourself questions such:

  • Is the applied solution effective?
  • Will this solution be applicable to other problems?
  • Are there any changes you would make?
  • Is there another solution that would apply better?

Hopefully, this article will provide readers with a new perspective, a better understanding of problem-solving, its importance, and how to solve a problem using the popular IDEAL model.
