Online interview secrets to “score points”: What to keep in mind?

Ntt 38

In the digital era, online interviews have become a popular format, especially in multinational companies. This is a great opportunity to showcase yourself, but it also brings unique challenges. This article will cover the experiences and notes for students preparing for online interviews to ensure a smooth process and help you shine in the eyes of the employer.

Thorough preparation before the interview: The key to confidence

  • Check equipment and connection:
    • Stable Internet: Ensure a strong network connection to avoid interruptions. If possible, use a LAN cable instead of Wi-Fi.
    • Computer/Laptop: Use a device with a well-functioning camera and microphone. Fully charge the battery or plug it in directly.
    • Headset with microphone: Crucial for eliminating background noise and helping you hear the employer’s questions clearly. Prioritize wired types to avoid running out of battery or connection issues.
    • Check meeting software: Make sure you have installed and familiarized yourself with the interview platform (MS Teams, Zoom, Google Meet…) at least 15-30 minutes before the appointment time. Test the microphone, speakers, and camera.
  • Interview space:
    • Quiet and private: Choose a place free from noise disturbances (people talking, TV sounds, traffic sounds…). Inform your family members not to disturb you during this time.
    • Clean, professional background: Ideally a blank wall with minimal clutter. Avoid cluttered personal items or inappropriate images/posters in the background. If you don’t have an ideal background, use the blur background or virtual background feature available in the software.
    • Adequate lighting: Ensure your face is clearly lit without backlighting (light should come from the front or sides).
  • Clothing and appearance:
    • Dress professionally from head to toe: Even if only the upper half is visible, dress appropriately. This not only creates a good impression but also helps you have a more serious mindset for the interview.
    • Neat hair: Makes you look more professional and polished.

During the interview: Impress with confidence and subtlety

  • On time (even earlier):
    • Join the call 5-10 minutes before the appointment time to do a final check of everything and get ready.
  • Body language and non-verbal communication:
    • Maintain eye contact: Look straight into the camera instead of your own screen. This creates the feeling that you are communicating directly with the employer.
    • Sit up straight: A straight posture demonstrates confidence and professionalism.
    • Nod and smile: Show active listening and engagement.
    • Limit unnecessary hand movements: Avoid touching your face, fixing your hair, or other distracting gestures.
  • Speaking style:
    • Speak clearly and articulately: Ensure moderate volume and a moderate speaking pace.
    • Listen carefully to questions: Do not interrupt the employer. If you don’t understand clearly, politely ask them to repeat or explain further.
    • Answer concisely, get straight to the point: Avoid rambling. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) when talking about your experience.
    • Honest and confident: Share your experience truthfully. If you don’t know, honestly admit it and show a willingness to learn.
  • Interacting with the online environment:
    • Turn off notifications: Ensure your phone and computer have no notifications that could cause disruptions.
    • Prepare notes: You can have a notebook and pen to jot down important points or questions you want to ask. However, avoid staring intently at your notes too much.
    • Learn about the company and the applied position: This is basic but extremely important. Demonstrating your understanding of the company and the position will help you “score big points”.

After the interview: Maintain the impression

  • Send a thank-you email:

    • Within 24 hours after the interview, send a brief thank-you email to the employer. Reiterate your interest in the position and thank them for their time.

Online interviewing is a skill that requires practice. Prepare thoroughly, confidently showcase yourself, and always maintain a professional attitude. Wishing all students success on their journey to find their dream internships and jobs!
