You must have heard these two words through the media. But do you know what information is required to create a complete resume / CV? Or how to write an effective resume / CV for those without experience? The following article will answer your questions.
What does a resume / CV mean?
Resume / CV is an abbreviation for ‘Curriculum Vitae’ in English, also known as a ‘Resume / CV’ whenever you want to apply for a job position in the labor market. A resume / CV can be considered as a ‘sales letter’. It is not simply filling in basic information such as name, contact address… but you also have to list information and skills related to the job you are applying for.
What information does a standard resume / CV need to provide?
Personal Information
In the personal information section, you will provide your name, photo, contact information, date of birth…. Regarding the contact information in the email address section, you should note to avoid setting up an unprofessional email address such as c0ngckuab0ngb0ng123@gmail.com. Because it does not show professionalism.
The secret is to set your email address as follows: Full name + number. Besides, information about where you live and work should not be mentioned in too much detail because it will make the address section lengthy and unbalance the layout. Just write the name of your current district and city / province is enough.
Next is the personal photo. You should choose a photo that covers the face, from the waist up. Often many people choose ID photos, which is fine, but you should have a photo with nice or formal attire as this will show more professionalism. Do not choose selfies, photos taken too far away, poor quality, or unconventional outfits because employers will not see your seriousness during the job search process. People often say ‘making a great first impression – getting off to a good start’. Therefore, try to choose a truly suitable photo to impress the employer.
Career Objectives
Here you will have to show employers your future orientations for the job you want to apply for. Therefore, determine what you want in your job for the coming years. You should not write general objectives because this shows that you are confused and have not clearly defined your own career orientation.
Example: “Wishing to learn and work in a professional, dynamic environment, contributing to the growing development of the company”. Instead, you can mention who you will be in the next 5 years, what values you will bring to the company through your capacity….
Education
If you have high academic scores, you should include them in your CV so that employers can see your interest and perseverance in your field of study. Conversely, if your grades are not high, you do not need to mention them. Absolutely do not include your education history from elementary, middle, and high school, as employers are not interested in this. Additionally, doing so will make your education section overly lengthy.
To make an impression with the ‘Education’ section, you can mention achievements attained during your studies, awards in competitions, scientific research projects, etc., or short-term courses related to the job position.
Skills
In this section, state your outstanding skills relevant to the job. For example, if you are applying for a Content position, skills such as content writing, using graphic software, analysis, etc., are very important.
Work Experience
This is the section you need to invest the most effort in, as employers always focus on it. What you should do is write the company name, job title, and working period. Along with that, list the tasks you undertook during your work, the results achieved with evidence and ‘specific data’. Then, arrange them in reverse chronological order from the most recent to the oldest.
How to write a good CV when you do not have much experience?
Most people lacking experience are fresh graduates. So how can you make yourself ‘valuable’ and get employers to accept your ‘pitch’?
Focus on listing additional short-term professional certificates. This shows employers that you are always ready to learn new knowledge to serve your job.
Additionally, include notable activities you participated in during your studies. For example, participating in academic competitions, community organizations, projects, etc. If you won awards or managed a project during this time, this is considered a big plus for students without much experience.
Some notes to avoid when writing work experience:
- Do not record overly detailed tasks such as serving water or pouring tea
- Describing too verbosely and without conciseness
- Jobs that you quit midway with too short a duration. Typically, interns work for about 3 or 6 months. If you are not an intern, this is considered a major minus!
- Grammar and spelling errors
- Rambling sentences that do not get to the main point
- The title in the CV should follow the employer’s request. If they do not request one, you can name the file as follows: CV – Job Title – Full Name
- Not being modest in wording
- Content without evidence or links
